To kill the goose that laid the golden eggs is an idiom used of an unprofitable action motivated by greed (Aesop’s Fables #87). It’s killing the hen to get the lump of gold believed to be inside, which it isn’t, or, killing the City of New York/Amazon deal to get the 3 billion dollars from Amazon (tax credits) in one lump sum which, also, is non-existent. Taxes is a part of the markets and commerce. That is the way that a government builds up a wide and deep tax base. Amazon comes into New York. Employees of the 25,000 jobs that Amazon provides pay income and other taxes. These employees get pizza and pay the pizza man and he pays taxes and he buys from purveyors and they pay taxes and on and on it goes and of course the employment uplifts New York City in its entirety. This makes the 3 billion tax credit look like peanuts when all benefits are considered.
But this is not how AOC and Bernie Sanders look at taxes. To them tax is confiscatory. To them you have too much money (Cortez has placed the amount at 10 million dollars), they want it and they are going to take it. It’s a social and economic justice thing, And to them, as I pointed out in an earlier blog on my website (Bottomless Well, June 18, 2018), the tax well never runs dry. There is always more where that came from. Cortez has had the problem that she has caused explicitly pointed out to her but because she is an ideological zealot, her response has been predictable. She has said, “If you don’t like the Green New Deal, then come up with your own ambitious, on-scale proposal to address the global climate crisis. Until then, we’re in charge – and you’re just shouting from the cheap seats”. She also declared, after another lengthy monologue, “I’m the boss”. She has now been labeled as the Democratic Party’s most inspirational leader.
She is not helping the people. She is harming them, but, her sense of righteousness seems to blind her to that fact. She is for the acquisition of personal power much like Nancy Pelosi although she tries to rationalize what she does as being moral and right. The temporary victory that she had in the Amazon fiasco is similar to Pelosi’s empty victory in her campaign against the wall. Both were accomplished by the assertion of personal power and damaged ordinary citizens in spite of a declaration by the proponents that, in each case, a noble cause was the justification.
The minute she hit the political scene, she fascinated me and I followed her in a number of my previous blogs. The Three Faces of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, dated August 15, 2018, compared her to Eva Peron and Angela Davis. Stay Calm And Chutzpah On, Dated December 19th, 2018, mentions among other things her demand to be appointed to the Congressional Finance and Banking Committee. “Crazy Like A Fox”, dated January 28, 2019, asserts that she may look like a wide eyed kid, but, she has the negative instincts of a ruthless politician and it would do well for her critics to stop laughing. “The AOC Express”, dated February 13th, 2019 is a general political overview of AOC.
Osario-Cortez has said that she is “in charge”. Let’s take a look. She did get Nancy Pelosi to give her that appointment to the Banking Committee, as mentioned above and the Democratic presidential hopefuls are falling all over themselves to get on board with her as to the Green New Deal thus raising expectations with a constituency which Cortez may control in 2020. She has declared herself “The Boss”. Well maybe, in some sense, she is.
There’s not much more to say to all of this except, be afraid. Be very afraid.
