The Census Games

Why are Democrats worried about the proposed citizenship question on the upcoming census? Well, in a presidential election it comes down to the Electoral College and not the popular vote. So, how is the
number of electors for each state decided? It is decided by population as is the number of Representatives that each state has in the House. There are a fixed number of 435 Representatives, but, the apportionment can be moved around according to state population. The more Representatives that a state has in the House, the more Electoral College votes that state has. Thus, if you don’t ask the citizenship question a state with a large number of non-citizens among its ranks would increase that states number of Electoral College votes. If non-citizens are removed from the count, Electoral College representation is decreased. The answer as to why the Left opposes the citizenship question is the essence of simplicity. It is the 2020 presidential election.
